I have spent a great deal of time talking with business owners. That's because it's what I do. And I have found that there is a noble DIY spirit in the heart of any entrepreneur. At the same time, every great entrepreneur has to know how to value his or her time. The bottom line is that business owners do not have time to figure out how to do everything themselves. That is why they hire experts to do the work that they don't have time to learn.
It is a simple concept. Right?
At the same time, many business owners ask a somewhat ridiculous question about SEO. They ask if they can just do it themselves. The short answer, and the one I would like to give them is: yes, if you don't mind spending months' worth of hours learning the ins and outs of SEO.
As a professional Internet marketer there are simply A LOT of different things that contribute to my ability to do SEO well. Familiarity with WordPress, or another web development platform is a must. Basic HTML is a bonus. Web copywriting is (arguably) very important. But the biggest gap between a professional SEO guy or gal and the general business owner is all of the nooks and crannies.
There are thousands of tidbits of knowledge that make it possible to do what I do. Even if I were to list them out, you wouldn't know what I am talking about unless you are familiar with Internet marketing. As always, I caution hiring a quality SEO company. If you do work with a good company it will be a solid investment.
So, business owners can feel free to try their hand at their own SEO. If they want to get it done properly, however, it will need to be done professionally. There really is no way around it. Some marketing books on thrifty marketing might say otherwise. But it's also quite likely that they don't know what a great SEO company looks like.
The fact of the matter is that the basics of SEO are not extremely difficult. But the context required to employ them is vast. Hundreds of hours of learning are required just to get your head around doing good SEO/SEM.
The biggest question then, for business owners, is whether or not they have that time to burn. If they don't have time to 'dilly dally' then there really is only one reasonable option. For more info visit here: www.leithseo.com
